Another Pacific island adventure has come to an end. Before starting the travel I didn’t really think of visiting Pacific islands. I didn’t even know all of them. But as I was traveling in Australia and then in New Zealand I was so close to the Pacific that it would really be a shame of missing out these beautiful places. I had a chance to experience Samoan and Fijian way of life in the last 3 months. Which I like more? It’s very hard to say. They both are special in its own way. Samoa is still much less touristic and not yet influenced from the Western world. And that’s the fact that makes it even more interesting and beautiful. Fiji, on the other hand, is already westernized in many ways. Obviously it gets a lot of tourists, from billionaires to backpackers. Also a lot of Europeans.
In the last month we helped in a resort on Taveuni island, specialized in diving. I was mostly helping with marketing stuff and Mario was a deckhand, a snorkeling guide and we both babysitted the three adopted Fijian kids from the owners. We managed to do the Diving Open Water Course almost for free. Now we are certified and can dive anywhere in the world down to 18 m. Quite awesome.
In Samoa and Fiji our body was grateful for letting it go to sleep latest at 10 pm. At 6 am we were already wide awake and ready to start the day. We found it weird that people who came in a resort for holiday went straight to their rooms after dinner. There was nobody around after 9 pm. Consequently we also did the same thing. We were living healthy life with no stress, enough sleep and regular exercise. But there was one thing ruining our healthy daily routine. Way too oily food. The people here just don’t understand when you try to explain to them the amount of oil they use for one portion served is way too high. Sometimes we lost the appetite when looking at the plate in front of us. Even the steamed veggies were oily. Can somebody explain me how is that possible?!? We soon realized that is the way how they cook and we couldn’t do anything about it. But we also didn’t come to terms with it. You can imagine how sick I was of eating salads almost every day. The fatty food was probably the only disadvantage of the Pacific life. Everything else was beautiful. We got spoiled to wake up to a sunny morning and watch the sun falling into the sea most of the days. We even saw a rainbow during the night. I had no idea this is possible.
I am more than happy I had a chance to visit a tiny part of Pacific islands. They are special. The people are very warm and friendly, the weather is always hot and sunny and it is one of the places where your life pace slows down and you automatically switch to relax mode.
